Geschmacksperformance

Mario Ohno: "Auweiaculari"
Gustatory performance

Thursday, 27 September 2008: 7 pm

Everybody’s talking about cooking! Scene stars like Jamie Oliver are shaping the culinary lifestyles of an entire generation, showman-chefs are whetting the appetites of TV viewers evening after evening to an unprecedented extent and even in the art world, cooking is once again the subject of heated debate - at the latest since the most recent documenta.

With “Auweiaculari”, a gustatory performance conceived specially for Tresor, the intervention artist Mario Ohno is linking up with the trend but tweaking it in a way that is as surprising as it is convincing: instead of serving creations set out in a sophisticated arrangement aimed at inducing satiating effects and stimulating epicurean gourmandise, he reduces his artistic means to essentials by opening up a “parallel good-taste space” in his Performance. Blister-pack foods such as gnocchi that just need to be warmed up to fill hungry stomachs conveniently as well as fast - admittedly without tasting of much at all - morph into “readymades” in Ohno’s hands. He injects them with amplified taste potential by adding pure essences he has prepared in advance (such as oil of chili or parsley emulsion). Visitors are administered the product both in untreated form and in its modified state so that they can never be sure of what their feelings will be at the next gustatory venture.

Ohno’s approach is diametrically opposed to the controversial molecular cuisine currently practised by Catalan star chef Ferran Adrià, who aims at a tactile and visual metamorphosis of any foodstuffs he is dealing with in order to produce something never seen before. The Stuttgart artist, by contrast, “stuffs the eye’s gob” (to quote Ohno). By not showing visitors what they will be tasting at the next turn, he makes their palates tingle all the more with anticipation, which represents a stronger challenge to the sense of taste.

The ambience of the Tresor room, devoid as it is of windows and decoration, does make a visual impact and so does the circumstance that the artist hands round his test titbits on the sherds of plates smashed on site. Visitors don workmen’s gloves to receive them, thus becoming - like the artist himself - workmen on the taste construction site replacing the elitist setting in which star chefs operate.

Items of information on the artist:
In his work, Mario Ohno is concerned with an artistic stance. He views himself as a “presenter of thinking” and sees art as an “exchange of nutriments” with a potential for “transforming toxic substances into nectar”. Even at the outset of his career, Ohno was preoccupied with inquiring into the function of art and arrived at performative action forms via material processes. Alongside appliance-like sculpture (for instance, a condom dispenser at the 1991 Styrian Autumn Festival in Graz), he has created combination sculptures consisting of furniture such as a table and chair, a bar and a plate case or light-box wardrobes. In the late 1990s, Mario Ohno collaborated with Michael Lingner in having a dinner service made that sported sayings on art and life. When the question arose of just what specific use it might be put to, he had the idea of inaugurating a one-room St Amour banquet, a long-term communicative project that Ohno operates with the aim of getting into discussions with his guests on art through the sayings in his plates. Every person who is eating and drinking with him thus participates in shaping a social form. In 2006 Mario Ohno and his wife, Anna Ohno, founded their joint “Life’s artwork” in Stuttgart: Reinsburghallen, an experimental site for art at a far remove from establishment art doings and the current home of the St Amour one-room banquet.
